Case Study: Zippo Lighter or No1 Branded iPhone App

(3)

Marketing moves from ads to apps. There already are 25,000 iPhone applications and brands likeKraft, Audi, Coke and Nike have all introduced apps in recent months to latch on to the ‘newest of new’ things. “The brands face daunting odds of becoming the next big app”, writes Adweek. So which branded smartphone apps are successful? So here is the case study of the Virtual Zippo Lighter, the most popular brand application on the iPhone platform.

Case study: Zippo lighter app

Brand: Zippo
Goal: brand extension online
Solution: Virtual Zippo Lighter – free iPhone application
Results: 3 million downloads since its introduction last September. The Virtual Zippo Lighter became the most popular branded iPhone app.

What to learn:

Applications tend to live and die based on their usefulness. If you've been to a rock concert recently, you've probably seen fans holding up iPhones with Zippo lighters above their heads. 100% wind proof, no risk to burn your fingers and a great solution for the non-smokers.

The big idea is extending your product online. For companies like banks and hotel chains, that’s very simple. Launch an app, making iPhone users book your rooms or make transactions straight through their phones and that’s it.

So… what are you doing? What could be a “virtual lighter” in your business?
